A pupil of Jean-François Hue and Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, Alexandre Millin du Perreux was a painter who travelled extensively, visiting Switzerland, Italy and Spain and spending seven years in the Pyrenees.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1793 to 1822. Appreciated by Empress Josephine and later protected by the Bourbons, he was appointed a member of the Arts Commission and awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 1806. A painter of historical landscapes and views, he was commissioned to paint two historical compositions for the Galerie de Diane at the Château de Fontainebleau. Here, as in most of his works, the painter offers a vast landscape from which emerges the château, whose walled grounds are set in open countryside. A dirt track, used by several people, winds through the landscape, adding to the depth of the field of vision. The château was built at the end of the 17th century and has since been altered, particularly in the 19th century. Listed as a historic monument, it houses the Fondation de Coubertin museum, which preserves and disseminates a collection of sculptures and drawings by sculptors dating from the late 19th century to the present day and centred around the figure of Joseph Bernard (1866-1931). The museum is also a pillar of the cultural education provided by the Fondation de Coubertin.
