Auguste Jean-Baptiste Vinchon (1789-1855) was a history and portrait painter whose work falls somewhere between Classicism and Romanticism. He trained at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts with illustrious masters such as Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) and Gioacchino Serangeli (1768-1852). He won the Grand Prix de Rome for historical painting in 1814 with his painting Diagoras carried in triumph by his sons. This success enabled him to stay at the Académie de France in Rome from 1816 to 1818, during which time he produced numerous sketches in Naples, Capri and at the Villa d'Este.
On his return to Paris, Vinchon exhibited regularly at the Salon between 1822 and 1855. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur in 1828. He specialised in fresco painting and was commissioned by institutions and private clients. He produced a number of large-scale decorations, including the frescoes in the chapel of Saint-Maurice (now Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc) in the church of Saint-Sulpice. He also worked at the Musée Charles-X in the Louvre alongside Nicolas Gosse (1787-1878), and created grisaille vaults for the Palais Brongniart.
Alongside his career as a history painter, Vinchon was also the director of a Paris printing company.
