This Portrait of a Young Dutch Man was painted by Georges Bertin Scott in 1909 during a trip to the Netherlands commissioned by L'Illustration. The drawing is located in Volendam (spelt "Wolemdam"), a fishing village 20 kilometres north-east of Amsterdam that was popular with artists at the end of the 19th century for the picturesque character of its inhabitants and their traditional costumes.
Georges Bertin Scott studied at the Beaux-Arts and became a pupil of the famous military painter Édouard Detaille (1848-1912). At the age of 18, he embarked on a career as an illustrator and began working with various periodicals. He is best known for his fifty-year collaboration with the newspaper L'Illustration. L'Illustration regularly sent him around the world to draw landscapes, people and local costumes.
Scott covered the Balkan Wars, the First World War, the Spanish Civil War and the start of the Second World War. During the Great War, his reconstructions exalting the heroism of the soldiers became icons of French propaganda. He also produced numerous recruitment posters for the army, and in 1911 was even asked to design new French military uniforms.
The portrait of this child sitting on the ground, probably encountered at a market, was captured on the spot. The intensity of his subject's expression and the truth of his attitude reveal his talent as a portrait painter, which enabled him to paint official portraits of many heads of state and military leaders of his time, including King George V of England, King Alfonso XIII of Spain, Mussolini, General Franco and Marshal Foch.
