La danse des muses painted in 1898 by Ferdinand Bac is one of the very few known oil paintings by this artist.
Better known as a worldly draughtsman, Bac was nevertheless an eclectic and versatile artist. Born in Stuttgart, he arrived in Paris after the fall of the Second Empire and quickly made a name for himself in the press of the time. As a writer, painter, metalworker and lithographer, he rubbed shoulders with many of the leading figures of his time, including Verlaine, Hugo, Wagner and Proust, and produced an abundance of literary and graphic work. From the 1910s onwards, he devoted a major part of his life to architecture, decoration and landscaping.
This painting, inspired by Symbolism and bordering on Art Nouveau, reveals his artistic interests and sheds light on a little-known aspect of his career.
The exact motif of this painting was reproduced around 1900 on an iridescent plate by the famous ceramist Clément Massier.
