This beautiful red chalk by Nicolas Mignard was used in preparation for the figure of Anne the prophetess in the painting The Presentation in the Temple in the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges in L'Isle sur la Sorgue in the Vaucluse. This painting is signed and dated 1665. Mignard painted it in Paris for a client in the south of France.
In 1665, Nicolas Mignard was at the height of his career. He had left Avignon and was working for the Court after being called to Paris by Cardinal Mazarin in 1660, where he was commissioned by Louis XIV to decorate several flats on the ground floor of the Tuileries Palace. He was accepted into the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1663, without having to present a reception piece. In 1664, he became a professor and deputy rector of the Academy.
The figure of Anne the prophetess, described in the New Testament as an eighty-four-year-old widow, attends the scene of the Presentation in the Temple and recognises the child as the Messiah. Our drawing shows few variations from the painted figure. In the painting, Mignard has accentuated the aged features of the face and removed the folds of the drapery behind the clasped hands. He also added a darker, patterned band to simply embellish the prophetess's outfit.
