Description
16th century Italian school
Study for a luxurious "Dantesca" armchair in carved wood with grotesque decoration
Pen and brown ink
24.8 x 17.6 cm.
Handwritten annotation in ink, probably dating from the 16th century, lower right: "Sedia di Leone Decimo Pontefice" ("Seat of Pope Leo X")
If the annotation on this drawing is to be believed, this chair would have been used by Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici (1475-1521), the 217th Pope under the name of Leo X, a great prince of the arts and a patron of Raphael.
