Virgin and Child surrounded by musical angels, 1860

32.5 x 27 cm
This Virgin and Child surrounded by angel musicians is a charcoal version of the oil on canvas of the same subject painted by Anselm Feuerbach and now in the Staatliche Kunstammlungen in Dresden.
Anselm Feuerbach is considered one of the most important German painters of the second half of the 19th century. He studied art in Düsseldorf, Munich, Antwerp and Paris, where he met Carl Rahl (1812-1865) and Thomas Couture (1815-1879). However, it was during his travels in Italy that he found his calling. In Rome, he met his muse, Nana, who became the model for many of his works, including this one. Supported by patrons such as Count Friedrich von Schack (1815-1894), he spent most of his career in Rome before being appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1873.
The quality of this drawing is indicative of Feuerbach's talent and bears witness to the success of this composition, inspired by Renaissance masters such as Raphael and Giorgione, which left its mark on the critics of the day. His patron, Schack, commissioned a second version, which can now be seen in the Schack Museum in Munich, and it was probably motivated by a similar request that the artist produced this work.
