Description
Etienne Jeaurat (1699-1789) The painter's move Pen and brown ink and grey wash on paper 195 x 280 mm Étienne Jeaurat (1699-1789) had a brilliant official career as a history painter, but he is best known for his picturesque scenes of everyday life in Paris, such as the one depicted here. Born in Paris into a family of wine merchants, he became a pupil of the painter Nicolas Vleughels (1766-1737). When Vleughels was appointed director of the Académie de France in Rome in 1724, he took Jeaurat with him to Italy. On his return, Jeaurat was approved by the Académie Royale in 1731, and was accepted as a history painter there in 1733 with his work Pyrame et Thisbé. He became a professor in 1743, rector in 1765 and then chancellor in 1781. He exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1737 to 1769. In 1767, he was appointed to guard the King's Cabinet at Versailles. Despite his status as a history painter, Jeaurat, influenced by the "poissard genre", a popular literary and theatrical style brought into fashion by his friend Jean-Joseph Vadé (1719-1757), enjoyed great success with his genre scenes. In these paintings, he often depicted the common people, as in Le Déménagement du peintre, painted in 1755 and known from an engraving by Claude Duflos (1700-1786), which depicts the same subject as this drawing. The drawing was authenticated by Madame Sylvie Claudon de Langlade, author of the artist's catalogue raisonné, after a visual examination.
