The Prix de l'Indochine was a French artistic distinction awarded mainly between 1914 and
and 1938, designed as a travel and residence grant for artists from mainland France. From
many travelling painters benefited from it and trained by confronting their academic eye
to the reality and poetry of Southeast Asia. Most of them lived in what is now
Vietnam as their home, and several of the laureates went on to teach at the Ecole des
School of Fine Arts in Indochina. During their stays, these artists brought back to France
a series of portraits, sketches and landscapes from which our oil on panel is most likely derived.
