Roswell KELLER (1915–1975) ‘The Escape to the Free Zone’ Gouache, 35 × 33 cm (framed 50 × 48 cm), dated 1961, signed and inscribed ‘To Marcel Haedrich ’. In 1939, Marcel Haedrich was sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany. He was released along with the other Alsatians in December 1940 and made his way to the Free Zone thanks to the help of railway workers. This scene was re-enacted and photographed to illustrate an extract from Marcel Haedrich’s book *La rose et les soldats* and its publication in *Marie-Claire* magazine in 1961. That same year, Keller immortalised it in this superb gouache. Roswell Keller, an American illustrator and painter, famous for his numerous illustrations for magazines, books and posters, notably featuring ‘pin-up’ girls.
