NGUYEN VAN RO (1921–1997) ‘The Rice Harvest in Vietnam’ Red and gold lacquered wooden panel with inlaid eggshells, 21 x 31 cm (view size) (41 x 51 cm including frame), signed lower right. Provenance: Acquired by Mr Gilbert BOUVERET, Director of the Banque d’Indochine from 1950 to 1958. This work by the Vietnamese artist Nguyen Van Ro demonstrates his mastery of lacquer, with gold leaf applied in swirling patterns on the water around these women as they transplant the rice, clump by clump. Just like those harvesting it amidst the movement of the golden stalks. The eggshells placed on the hats and bodies illuminate the work.
