Description
* REVERSE * A significant single-sided cast iron medal with a black patina, depicting in bas-relief Charles IV of Spain (1748–1819), his wife Marie-Louise of Parma (1751–1819) and their six children (Carlotta Johachina, Queen of Portugal; Don Ferdinando, Prince of Asturias – Ferdinand VII; Maria Luigia, Queen of Etruria; Maria Isabella, wife of Francis I of Naples; Don Carlos; and Don Francesco di Paola). Circa 1808. Diameter: 18 cm. Hanging loop missing. Notes: Charles IV of Spain abdicated in March 1808 following the Aranjuez revolt, a popular uprising directed against his policies and his favourite, Manuel. He then ceded the throne to his son, Ferdinand VII. However, this abdication was quickly challenged by Napoleon Bonaparte, who intervened, summoned the royal family to Bayonne and forced both Charles IV and Ferdinand VII to renounce their rights, thereby placing his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne.
