Description
Thomas BERNARD (1650–1713).
A circular bronze medal bearing on the obverse a bust of Louis XIII facing right, struck with the lion’s head and surmounted by the inscription LUDOVICUS. – XIII. FR. ET. NAV. REX (Louis XIII – King of France and Navarre); on the reverse, Louis XIII in royal robes prostrate before the altar erected on his orders in the Church of Notre-Dame de Paris, offering the Virgin the attributes of his kingship, surmounted by the inscription SE ET REGNUM DEO SUB B. MARIÆ TUTELA CONSECRAVIT. and in the exergue ARAM VOVIT - MDCXXVIII.

Slight oxidation on the obverse.
Notes: This medal was struck to commemorate the vows of 1638 by which Louis XIII consecrated France to the Virgin Mary; it is also the year of the birth of the Dauphin, the future Louis XIV.
