Description
STRAHLENBERG (Philipp Johann Tabbert von). A Historical Description of the Russian Empire. Amsterdam, & Paris, published by Desaint & Saillant, 1757. 2 volumes in-12, first edition of the French translation of the first detailed work on Russia, covering a wide range of aspects of the empire, including history, linguistics (notably featuring a Kalmyk and Mongolian glossary), natural history, geopolitics, economics, ethnography and sociology; it was originally published in German in 1726 and in its entirety in Stockholm in 1730. The author was a Swedish officer of German origin who was taken prisoner by the army of Peter the Great in 1709 during the Battle of Poltava in the Great Northern War and remained in Siberia from 1711 to 1721, where, amongst other things, he accompanied Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt on his exploration of Siberia. Contemporary marbled full leather binding, smooth spine with decorative lettering, title and volume number labels in red morocco. Ex-libris of Nicolas Multz.
