Description
TRIPTYCH ICON Carved, polychrome and gilded wood depicting Saint Michael, Saint Helena and Saint Constantine. The central panel opens onto a slightly concave arched opening, highlighted in red. The spandrels, adorned with gilded foliage, frame the image of the Archangel Michael: armed with a sword, he is clad in military attire and identified by a Greek inscription (Ο ΑΡΧ ΜΙΧΑΗΛ). Two foliage motifs, carved in bas-relief and gilded, extend the panel at its top and bottom edges. The two side panels depict, on the right, Saint Helena (ΑΓΙΑ ΕΛΕΝΑ), and on the left, her son Constantine (Ο Α ΚΟΝςΤΑΝΤΙΝ). Both are crowned, dressed in imperial regalia and holding a sceptre; with one hand, they point to the relic of the True Cross. Greece or the Balkans, 19th century H.: 24 cm – W. (open): 24.5 cm – W. (closed): 12.5 cm (signs of wear and damage) – Expert: BERTRAND Benoît
