Description
Jean - Léon GEROME (1824-1904), "Portrait of the horse "BIDET", HST Dim: 42x56 cm, SBD, dispatch "to my friend Rattier" dated 1873 -
Condition: a restored tear to the left, a restored hole to the right, old fold at the top.
Note that the canvas was folded at the top along its entire length at the time of execution and unfolded to be placed on its stretcher. Portraits of horses are rare under GEROME's brushes. Bidet, his friend RATTIER's favourite mount, was certainly a horse appreciated by its owner, who asked the painter to note on a sign on the left: "BIDET, 12 years old, from Mr RATTIER's stables. 25 francs reward to the person who will do the hair on his legs". In addition to the exceptional "finish" of the painter's work, this work features a personalised portrait of a remarkable horse, with an almost human expression (note its eyes), as well as a scene with a humorous text reminiscent of the famous sign for an optician "O PTI CIEN" dating from 1902. A portrait of Mr Rattier can be found in Gérard Akerman's catalogue raisonné, no. 494.
