Description
Living room furniture in gilded wood. It includes a large basket sofa, a suite of four flat-back armchairs known as "mobilier meublant", a suite of four cabriolet armchairs known as "mobilier volant" and a two-seater "haricot" sofa. This architecturally successful ensemble features carvings decorated with flowers, broad scrolls and sinuous, moulded armrests. The legs are arched and decorated with a flower in the corners and an acanthus leaf at the bottom. This salon furniture was painted in the 18th century. All the seats are stamped by the Parisian cabinetmaker Etienne MEUNIER. NB: This furniture has never been dismantled and still has its original pegs. There has been some restoration work to the uprights and crosspieces on some of the seats and on the sofa. Etienne Meunier. The most famous of his family of cabinet-makers (father and brothers), he was active in the first half of the 18th century on the rue de Cléry. He became famous for his Louis XV desk chairs with gondola backs and median front legs. His sculpture is sober, often centred on a flower framed by leaves. His chairs are recognisable by the gently curving lower crosspiece of the back.
