Description
BABOULENE and MULLER, late 19th-century French school
A pair of caricature paintings.
Signed.
Damage and losses.
202 x 95 cm.
208 x 63 cm.
Our two canvases depict Jules Méline, born on 20 May 1838 in Remiremont (Vosges) and died on 21 December 1925 in Paris (Seine), a French politician who served as a minister on several occasions and was Prime Minister from 1896 to 1898.
An advocate for the agricultural sector, in 1892 he introduced protectionist measures for agricultural produce (the Méline tariff). His sceptre, topped with a beetroot, the reference to the ‘Sugar’ section and the depiction of foreign sugar producers illustrate this trend towards closing borders.
He was also behind the creation of the Agricultural Merit award in 1883, which is caricatured under the heading ‘Agricultural Méline’ in the second painting.
