This composition is based on a model traditionally attributed to Benedetto da Maiano, of which only one version by his workshop is known. The fortunes of the iconographic type of Virgo lactans should be seen in the light of the humanisation of saintly figures in popular devotion. This particular depiction of the Virgin and the infant Jesus, one of the prototypes of which in sculpture is thought to be the work of Andrea and Nino Pisano dating from 1346 to 1348 (kept in the San Matteo Museum in Pisa), was appreciated by the faithful, who could identify with this moment of maternal intimacy. It was particularly popular in Tuscany in the 15th century, as evidenced by the many examples still preserved in the region's churches and museums. The simplicity of the materials used, the stucco and the repetitive technique employed (through the use of stamping) all contributed to the spread of this type of devotional work during the Renaissance and in subsequent centuries.
