Description
Soumak carpet (woven in wool on wool warp and weft), South-East Caucasus.
Circa 1900-1940.
(Worn and frayed.)
Length: 325 cm; Width: 285 cm.
Soumak is thought to derive from the name of the former capital of the Khanate of Chirvan: Shemakha. However, this carpet is thought to have originated in the region of Kuba or Dagestan. Carpets from the surrounding regions would have been sold in the Shemakha bazaar.
This name could also come from the red colour, often dominant in Soumak, obtained from the berries of the shrub of the same name.
The Soumak technique differs from that of other kilims: in the weaving of a soumak, there is an alternation between a passage of coloured weft through the plain warp threads and a winding of additional weft threads around the warp threads, thus forming the decoration and a weave with a more solid embroidered appearance.
It is enhanced by numerous lozenges with polychrome geometric motifs. Numerous narrow borders with multicoloured geometric designs surround the composition.
