Biography :
Alessandro Franchi (1819-1878)
Titular Archbishop of Thessalonica in 1853.
Pope Pius IX created him cardinal-deacon at the consistory of 22 December 1873. He was secretary of the Extraordinary Congregation for Ecclesiastical Affairs from 1860 to 1868. In that year, he was sent as apostolic nuncio to Spain and then as legate a latere to Constantinople (to resolve the schism of the Armenian church). From 1874 to 1878, Franchi was prefect of the Congregation of Propaganda Fide. He took part in the conclave of 1878, when Leo XIII was elected Pope. He was Cardinal Secretary of State, Prefect of the Apostolic Palace and Administrator of the Patrimony of the Holy See from March 1878 until his death in July from malaria (or poisoning, according to a widespread rumour at the time).
