Description
Court scene probably from the story of a young queen
Tournai tapestry,
Last quarter of the 15th or early 16th century
Woven in wool and silk
Height 290 cm; Width: 183 cm
This finely woven fragment illustrates a subject, difficult to identify, which belongs to the category known as Court Scenes, bringing together courtly subjects, often a group of elegantly dressed figures adorned with precious ornaments. In the foreground, a young woman holds a musical instrument in her hands, while a lady of the court kneels and hands her a cup. The man behind her seems to be pointing at her, perhaps making her one of the main characters in this composition. In the background are a host of male and female figures, in a variety of actions and costumes. A headdress in the shape of a dragon's wing adds a whimsical, theatrical touch to the scene. This tapestry, originally large in scale, has been cut back in height and width. On the left is a coloured marble column, decorated with a palmette, whose role was undoubtedly to visually and narratively organise the space of the composition. It could also be the remnant of a throne, an object regularly featured in Tournaisian court scenes from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
This interesting and rare fragment has retained its beautiful, vivid colours. It is in good condition, with some wear to the silks and old restorations.
