Description
Meeting of nymphs near a fountain
Brussels tapestry
Probably in the style of Lodewijk van Schoor
First half of the 18th century
Woven in wool and silk
Height 282 cm; Width: 302 cm
This fine and beautiful tapestry shows a group of young women or nymphs near a fountain. One of them, dressed in shimmering colours, places a bouquet of flowers at the feet of her two companions, and seems to be looking away. The gestures and delicate expressions of the figures, as well as the supple, billowing draperies, give the scene a certain sensuality, bringing it closer to compositions by Lodewijk van Schoor. Nature, rather wild in the foreground, forms a setting that isolates the figures from the ordered landscape visible in the background. The border is decorated with bouquets, vases of flowers and foliage.
This charming tapestry has retained its beautiful bright colours and its original border. It appears to be in good condition with some wear. It appears to be reduced in height and probably in width.
