Description
Antwerp school circa 1530, entourage of the Master of 1518 (inner panels) and Rhenish School, entourage of Bartel BRUYN (outer panels) Two altarpiece panels with Saint Veronica and Saint Mary Magdalene On the back, Saint Wenceslas and Saint Benedict Pair of panels Height 89 cm; Width: 25.5 cm With frame - Height 100 cm; Width: 36 cm The faux marble borders have been added. The commissioner of these panels probably commissioned them in two stages. He asked an Antwerp Mannerist painter to paint the inner shutters and probably the central panel, which has now disappeared. The painter is close to Jan de Beer, the Master of 1518 and the Master of Frankfurt; the luminous landscapes are reminiscent of those by Joachim Patinir. Saint Elisabeth is wearing a sumptuous costume with precious embroidery and an elaborate headdress. In front of her, she holds an unfurled veil on which the face of Christ miraculously appears. Her gesture is calm and solemn, highlighting the sacred relic she is presenting. The pair was then entrusted to a German painter, who produced the portraits and their patron saints on the outside, the inside and the outside. The one on the right shows a saint in armour, holding a coat of arms with a double-headed eagle, the emblem of the Holy Roman Empire. Their style is reminiscent of Bartel Bruyn the Elder and the painters of the Colonnese school around 1530 (for example, the layout of Bruyn's Rink-Altar in the Alte Pinakothek). Exceptionally, some paintings begun in Antwerp could be finished in Cologne, especially if the commissioner was unable to travel to Cologne to have his portrait included in the painting, as many ships were regularly sailing between the two cities at the time.
