Born in Montargis on 4 July 1789, Alexandre de Lutton himself served in the King's Guard at the beginning of the Restoration, a circumstance in which he probably met his model. The King's bodyguard from 1813 to 1816, he was awarded the Légion d'honneur in 1814. After being shot in the right foot, he seems to have turned to a career in art. His presence is attested in 1821 in Metz as director of the School of Painting (1). He published a "Journal de Peinture" and left the city after the second issue. However, little is known about his biography.
This full-length portrait shows Jean-Baptiste-Hugues Nelson-Cottreau (1786-1851), a member of a family of industrialists, sugar refiners and art collectors. In 1811, he wrote a collection of verses entitled "Le Bal de Brévannes" in the emerging Troubadour style, and later an essay dedicated to the painter Charles Kuwasseg (2).
Lutton depicts him dressed in the uniform of the bodyguards of the 2nd company of Musketeers under the reign of Louis XVIII. Garde d'honneur in 1813 and 1814, officer in the king's musketeers in 1814 and 1815, Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1814, he retired in 1816 with the rank of cavalry lieutenant.
