Icchō was born in Ishikawa prefecture. During his lifetime, he quickly became one of the most highly regarded craftsmen in the field of Wajima-nuri lacquerware. Icchō specialised in maki-e, a technique that involves decorating lacquer by sprinkling gold or silver particles over a wet lacquer pattern. His natsume are now particularly popular. His works are characterised by his keen sense of colour, with sometimes quite bold use of bright colours, and by their composition. He has exhibited six times at the prestigious state-sponsored Nitten exhibition, exhibited at the Japan Crafts Exhibition and won the top prize at the eighth Contemporary Art Exhibition. He trained artisan lacquerer Tasaki Shōichirō (b. 1931) from the age of fifteen. Shōichirō proved to be an excellent lacquer craftsman himself: in 1996 he was awarded the Medal of Honour with Purple Ribbon (a prestigious award given to individuals for their artistic or scientific achievements).
