Kadono Iwaji 角野岩次 (Japan, 1925-2013) A ro-iro lacquer tea pot (natsume) with gold lacquer hira maki-e decoration of a grasshopper in pine trees. The interior in black lacquer. On the reverse, signed "Iwa". H. 5.5 cm Storage box (tomobako), inscribed "maki-e grasshopper, natsume", signed inside Iwaji and stamped. Kadono Iwaji 角野岩次 (1925-2013) Kadono Iwaji was a renowned artist specialising in Wajima lacquer, born in Ishikawa in 1925, who particularly excelled in the gold damascene (chinkin) technique. His master was his uncle, Makino Seikichi (?), with whom he began his apprenticeship in 1946. Then, in 1947, he set up his own business. Kadono has had a very active career, exhibiting his work on numerous occasions, both in Japan and abroad (Istanbul, Berlin and Spain). He has taken part in the prestigious Nitten competition at least three times before becoming a member of the jury himself, and has also exhibited at the Berliner Festspiele. Kadono has also won several awards, including the Japanese Prime Minister's Prize in 1982 and 1985, and the Hokkoku Bunka Prize in 1984.
