Wakajima Takao 若島孝雄 (Japan, 1935-)
Incense (kōgō) box in the form of a knotted fabric in ro-iro lacquer with gold lacquer hira maki-e decoration of paulownia and karakusa and kikko. The rim in shibuichi. The inside in nashiji lacquer.

Wakajima Takao was born in Ishikawa prefecture. At the age of eighteen, he entered the world of Wajima lacquerware. In 1954, he became an apprentice at the Keizuka lacquer workshop, which specialised in making Wajima lacquer. In 1958, he took over the family business specialising in lacquerware. He studied the kyūshitsu lacquer technique with the living national treasure Yūsai Akaji (1906-1984). He has won several prizes: in 1978, the Grand Prize at the National Lacquer Exhibition, and in 1983, the Encouragement Prize from the Japan Traditional Crafts Association. Since then, his works have been selected for exhibition on seventeen occasions. At the age of eighty, he stopped taking part in this prestigious exhibition and began working completely independently.
