Maehata Gahō, also known as Shunsai II, is a Japanese artist specialising in traditional lacquerware, renowned for creating exceptional traditional utensils for the Japanese tea ceremony and for using motifs from the Rinpa school in his lacquerwork. The eldest son of Maehata Shunsai (前端春斉), eighth head of the Maehata family, Maehata Gahō was trained in tea utensil lacquerware by Murata Dōkan, ishiji-nuri lacquerware by Nakamura Chokan and Kaga maki-e by Hoya Bisei. Maehata Gahō founded Mugen-an (Cultural Heritage of Ishikawa Prefecture) in 1983. Mugen-an is a modern Shoin-zukuri style house that inherits the traditional elements of a samurai residence. In 2003, he was commissioned to supervise the restoration of Kenchōji temple (an important cultural asset). Maehata Gahō's philosophy in creating a work is that "each object should be treated as if it were a precious jewel", so that the object itself becomes a statement. Maehata Gahō's mission is to create works that will be enjoyed by the next generation. He has also presented objects to the Emperor of Japan and Pope John Paul II. His son, Shunsai III, continues the Shunsai line.
