Born in Kyoto in 1933, his real name was Atsushi 厚. He studied the art of lacquerware with his father, Kawase Sentarō 川瀬千太郎. While preserving and implementing traditional techniques such as tamenuri (a lacquer technique using an undercoat of coloured lacquer and a clear topcoat) and kyo-shikki (a type of Kyoto lacquer) in his work, his lacquerware is also characterised by modern patterns and shapes. He works in the tradition of lacquer craftsman Kimura Hyōsai 木村表斎 (1817-1885) and his Hyōha 表派 technique (Hyō school), which shapes Kyoto-style lacquer.
He has exhibited in many venues, such as Nitten, New Japanese Crafts, Kyoto Handicraft Art Exhibition, etc. Recognised as an authority on the art of Japanese lacquerware, he has also taught lacquerware at the Kyoto University of Traditional Crafts. The Ministry of International Trade and Industry awarded him the title of "Kyoto Skilled Craftsman", while the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs presented him with the "Modern Skilled Craftsman" award. He also took part in the Shikinen Sengu ritual at the Ise sanctuary in 1993.
The Kawase Hyōkan line continues and the Hyōkandō shop can be visited in Kyoto.
