Sasaki Shōan 佐々木省庵 (Japan, 1947-) Round incense (kōgō) box in black kurogaki wood decorated in hira maki-e with red lacquer, gold, silver and mother-of-pearl inlays with a dragon in flight preparing to catch a tama. Signed on the reverse Shōan. Diameter 7.4 cm Storage box (tomobako) inscribed 'kurogaki, dragon maki-e, kōgō', signed Shōan and stamped. Sasaki Shōan was born in Kyoto in 1947. At the age of 20, he began his career in the art of lacquerware. Then, in 1987, he furthered his studies by taking the painter Akamatsu Ryō as his master. In 1985, Shōan presented his first exhibition. Since then, he has exhibited his work in numerous competitions and exhibitions. For example, in 1996 and 1998 he took part in the Tanko Tea Ceremony Art Biennial; and in 1999, 2004, 2007 and 2010 he held solo exhibitions at the Takashimaya department stores' art gallery in Kyoto. On his 60th birthday, the lacquer artist was awarded the title of 'Shōan Lacquer Craftsman' by the Gango-ji Temple World Heritage Site, and today he is a member of the Nihon kogei association.
