Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 1948-) A kimpun and hirame lacquer tea pot (natsume) decorated in hira maki-e with gold and red lacquer, nashiji and mother-of-pearl inlays of a phoenix in flight. The interior in nashiji. H. 5 cm high Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "phoenix maki-e, hira-natsume", signed Sōkō and stamped. Lacquer artist born in Ishikawa prefecture, town of Kaga. He learned lacquering techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware utensils for the tea ceremony. He specialises in Yamanaka-nuri, which preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. His work is highly regarded and carried out in the Yamanaka-onsen Higashimachi district of the town of Kaga, where many high-quality lacquerware items are produced. In Ishikawa prefecture, three types of lacquer are particularly prized: unlacquered wood from Yamanaka, lacquerware from Wajima and maki-e from Kanazawa.
