Kadode Shunpei 角出俊平 (Japan,1942- ) A ro-iro lacquer tea pot (natsume) with gold lacquer togidashi decoration and mother-of-pearl inlays of a thistle (azami). The interior in ginji lacquer. Signed Shun on the reverse. H. 5.8 cm Storage box (tomobako), inscribed "Chardon maki-e, hira-natsume", signed Shunpei and stamped. Kadode Shunpei is a renowned Kaga maki-e artist from Yamanaka in Ishikawa prefecture, where he was born in 1942. This artist has been exhibiting his work for many years and has taken part in numerous exhibitions over the years. For example, in 1982, Shunpei took part in the Yamanaka Maki-e exhibition (where he was awarded the gold prize), in 1985 in the Ishikawa Prefecture Traditional Industries Exhibition (where he received an encouragement prize), and from 1989 onwards in the Japan Traditional Urushi Works Exhibition. However, arguably his greatest achievement came in 1993, when Shunpei was recognised as a Master Traditional Craftsman by the Minister of the former Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Finally, Shunpei is also very active in the arts community, as he is affiliated to various arts and crafts-related associations, such as the Nihon Dentō Kōgeishi-kai (Japan Traditional Craftsmen Association), the Kaga Bijutsu Kyōkai (Kaga Arts Association) and the Yamanaka Saishitsu-kai (Yamanaka Coloured Urushi Association).
