Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 1948-)
A natural wood tea pot (natsume) with gold lacquer, nashiji and kirikane hira maki-e decoration of cherry blossoms and weeping willow. The interior in pale pink lacquer and hirame with hedatsu decoration of cherry blossom petals.

Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "Cherry willow maki-e, zelkova wood base, o-natsume", signed Sōkō and stamped.
Lacquer artist born in Ishikawa prefecture, town of Kaga. He learned lacquering techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware utensils for the tea ceremony. He specialises in Yamanaka-nuri, which preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. His work is highly regarded and carried out in the Yamanaka-onsen Higashimachi district of the town of Kaga, where many high-quality lacquerware items are produced. In Ishikawa prefecture, three types of lacquer are particularly prized: unlacquered wood from Yamanaka, lacquerware from Wajima and maki-e from Kanazawa.
