Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 20th century) Kinji lacquer tea pot (natsume) decorated with ro-iro lacquer reserves adorned with flowers of the four seasons in gold lacquer hira maki-e. The interior in nashiji lacquer. H. 7 cm high Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "Fleurs des quatre saisons maki-e, o-natsume", signed Soko and stamped, and brown lacquered transport box. Lacquerer born in the prefecture of Ishikawa, town of Kaga. He learnt lacquering techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware for the tea ceremony. He specialises in Yamanaka-nuri, which preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. His work is highly regarded and carried out in the Yamanaka-onsen Higashimachi district of the town of Kaga, where many high-quality lacquerware items are produced. In Ishikawa prefecture, three types of lacquer are particularly prized: unlacquered wood from Yamanaka, lacquer coverings from Wajima and maki-e from Kanazawa.
