Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 20th century)
Square kinji lacquer incense (kōgō) box with mother-of-pearl inlaid decoration of kiku and birds. The rims in shibuichi. The interior in nashiji.
Dim. 6.8 x 6.8 x 4.5 cm
Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "flower and bird motif, kōgō square pewter border", signed Sōkō and stamped.
Lacquer artist born in Ishikawa prefecture, town of Kaga. He learned lacquering techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware utensils for the tea ceremony. He specialises in Yamanaka-nuri, which preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. His work is highly regarded and carried out in the Yamanaka-onsen Higashimachi district of the town of Kaga, where many high-quality lacquerware items are produced. In Ishikawa prefecture, three types of lacquer are particularly prized: unlacquered wood from Yamanaka, lacquer coverings from Wajima and maki-e from Kanazawa.
