Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 20th century) Square kinji lacquer incense (kōgō) box with mother-of-pearl inlaid decoration of kiku and birds. The rims in shibuichi. The interior in nashiji. Dim. 6.8 x 6.8 x 4.5 cm Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "flower and bird motif, kōgō square pewter border", signed Sōkō and stamped. Lacquer artist born in Ishikawa prefecture, town of Kaga. He learned lacquering techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware utensils for the tea ceremony.
