Arai Masaharu II/III 二/三代荒井正春 (Japan, 20th century)
Round incense (kōgō) box in fundame lacquer with gold and silver lacquer hira maki-e and kirikane decoration of chrysanthemums and orchids. The interior in ginji lacquer with hira maki-e decoration in shukin and green lacquer of plum blossoms and bamboo.
Fukusa signed Masaharu and stamped.

Successor to Arai Masaharu I. In 1970, under the tutelage of Masaharu I, he studied lacquerware and the maki-e technique applied to lacquer tea ceremony utensils. In 1989, Masaharu II relaunched the workshop under the name Masaharu Kōbō, where, from then on, the various stages of the lacquer tea ceremony utensil manufacturing process were divided between separate departments. These departments worked closely together to create works of the highest quality.
