Ōshita Kōsen IV 四代大下香仙 (Japan, 20th century) Incense (kōgō) box in ro-iro lacquer with hira maki-e decoration of gold and silver lacquer and nashiji of kiku (chrysanthemums). The interior in ginji and hirame lacquer. Signed "ko". Diam. 7.9 cm Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "Chrysanthemums maki-e, maru kōgō", signed Kosen zo and stamped. Fourth generation of the Kosen family of lacquerers. In 1973 he began learning lacquer techniques from his father, the lacquer artist Kōsen I. He is director of the "Classic Ko" company, which produces lacquer accessories. Company statement: "While making original use of Maki-e lacquer decoration techniques and remaining true to a tradition handed down through the centuries, our creations are resolutely designed to harmonise with today's trends and sensibilities." He has exhibited his work in numerous venues, including the Traditional Japanese Lacquer Art Exhibition (1990). He currently works in Kaga, in the prefecture of Ishikawa.
