Hirano Naoyuki 平野直行 (Japan, 20th century)
A round ro-iro lacquer incense (kōgō) box with gold and silver lacquer hira maki-e decoration of an egret in flight, the rim in shibuichi. The interior in togidashi and kimpun of leaves. The nashiji lacquer underside signed Hirano.

Hirano Naoyuki was born in Kanazawa in 1899. He studied with the lacquer masters Futagi Seihō (1884-1954, famous for his realistic style) and Uematsu Hōbi (1872-1933, master of the elegant motifs of the Rimpa school.
In 1923, he began his studies in Kyoto at Doshisha University. After graduating, he specialised in aesthetics at the University of Hawaii. He is the author of books such as "The Spirit of Tea". He is also a member of the Kanazawa Urushi Association. He has exhibited at Nitten on several occasions.
