Michiba Sōkō 道場宗廣 (Japan, 20th century)
Large hirame lacquer tea pot (o-natsume) with gold lacquer hira maki-e decoration and mother-of-pearl inlays of clouds in mist; The interior in ginji and hirame.

Storage box (tomobako) inscribed "fond hirame nuages maki-e, o-natsume", signed Soko and stamped.
Lacquerer born in the prefecture of Ishikawa, town of Kaga. He learned lacquer techniques from his father. He specialises in lacquerware for the tea ceremony. He specialises in Yamanaka-nuri, which preserves and enhances the natural beauty of the wood grain. His work is highly regarded and carried out in the Yamanaka-onsen Higashimachi district of the town of Kaga, where many high-quality lacquerware items are produced. In Ishikawa prefecture, three types of lacquer are particularly prized: unlacquered wood from Yamanaka, lacquerware from Wajima and maki-e from Kanazawa.
