Estimate €10,000 - €15,000
Description
Murder of Duke Louis d'Orléans on 23 November 1407. Flemish tapestry, probably Brussels or Tournai. Around 1500. Woven in wool and silk. Height 135 cm ; Width : 177 cm. In the centre of the composition two knights in armour, swords in hand, assault two men in a cobbled street. One is wearing a brocade coat and crown, while the other, on the ground, is wearing defeated armour, his arms and purse lying on the cobbles. The purse could be a reference to the one entrusted to Raoul D'Anquetonville by John the Fearless to command the assassination of the Duke of Orléans. Confusion between certain accounts could explain the simultaneous depiction of two murders. This interesting and rare fragment has preserved its beautiful vivid colours. It is in good condition with some wear to the silks and old restorations.
