Description
A large brown tortoiseshell and engraved brass cartel decorated with caryatids, a female figure and a stilt-walker in a foliate scroll surround, the dial with blue enamelled Roman cartouches on a white background, with a cartel inscribed I Godde Laisné à Paris, surmounted by a dome supporting a Cupid figure, resting on a bracket (probably associated) in rosewood and brass marquetry with a bearded man mask and palmette; (the chime movement signed Thwaites & Reed, London, brought back in the 19th century). Regency period. Height : 139 cm 139 cm; Width: 52 cm; Depth: 25 cm Several models of cartels from this period are decorated with caryatids at the corners and are the work of different cabinet-makers. The original idea probably came from the cabinetmaker Daniel Marot (1661-1752), whose engraving of a cartel with similar caryatids at the corners is known. The original mechanism by clockmaker Jean Godde, who was awarded the title of Master in 1691, was replaced in the 19th century, when the cartel was probably in England.
