Description
Greenery with birds. Flemish tapestry, probably Oudenaarde. Late 16th-early 17th century. Woven in wool and silk (wool warp, wool and silk weft). Height 205 cm; Width: 285 cm. This majestic tapestry is part of the legacy of the large-leaf verdures of the late 16th century. Produced in several centres, including Enghien, Oudenaarde and Brussels, their popularity is such that it is difficult to define their provenance in the absence of borders and marks. The gigantic jagged leaves that used to occupy all the compositions give way to luxuriant flora, made up of superimpositions of multiple species, with supple, round foliage that contributes to the overall harmony of the scene. The vegetation stands alongside an elegant fountain, an enclosed garden and a wooden bridge, suggesting a human presence that is absent from the composition. The landscape is embellished by four birds, including a peacock enthroned in majesty, whose shape and colouring seem to blend in with the vegetation. In the background, the mountains and the river, in subdued, almost effaced tones, reflect the artist's search for an atmospheric perspective. The scene is enclosed by monumental architecture, evocative of a palace or fortress. This charming fragment has retained its beautiful colours. It is in a good state of preservation, with some wear to the silks. It is reduced in height and width.
