Description
Chinese carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile) probably knotted in the Ningxia region, circa 1900. (Slight wear and fraying.) Length: 436 cm; Width: 310 cm. The carpet features a five-clawed dragon framed by four dragons chasing the sacred pearl on a beige background. According to Western religious belief, the dragon represents an evil supernatural power. The Chinese, on the other hand, see it as an expression of power. Two ivory borders, one with floral motifs, surround the composition. Expert : Alexandre CHEVALIER Part II: 19 June 2026 - Chapter 5: Oriental & Western Carpets & Tapestries
