Description
Kirman carpet (cotton warp and weft, wool pile), South-East Persia. Circa 1900-1940. (Slight wear and fraying.) Length : 418 cm ; Width : 276 cm. The carpet is embellished with an elegant polychrome stylised floral design and floral scrolls on a havana background. A wide navy blue border with floral motifs and ivory cartouches with multicoloured flowers is framed by numerous counter-borders. The town of Kirman is isolated, which prevented it from playing an important role in the Sassanid era, but spared it from being pillaged by the Mongols. Its name, given in 928, means "place of war". Carpet weaving was encouraged during the Sefevid period, but was interrupted when the dynasty fell. It did not resume until the 19th century, and the offices of European carpet merchants gradually opened here. Around 1920, the city opened up to the American market. The wool in these carpets, which comes from neighbouring towns and sometimes from Khorassan, is soft and white and was hand-twisted until 1950. Kirman is also renowned for its wide range of colours, with fifteen to thirty different shades. Kirman carpets are often decorated with intricate floral motifs.
