Description
Melayer saddle (cotton warp and weft, wool velvet), Northwest Persia, circa 1920-1950.
(Slight wear.)
Length: 135 cm; Width: 124 cm.
This saddle is decorated with a herati design on an ivory background with a red ground. This design consists of a lozenge formed by curved stems, which encloses a rosette and is surmounted by a palmette at each apex, repeated ad infinitum, with four falciform leaves next to each other. This design adorned the Herat carpets (to which it owes its name). A narrow border with the same design encircles the composition.
