Description
Chirvan Konagend carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), North-East Caucasus. Circa 1900-1940. (Slight wear, abrasions and fraying). Length: 262 cm; Width: 145 cm. The carpet is decorated with a series of five large red and blue squares with geometric floral motifs, linked and enhanced by a small polychrome cartouche. The whole composition is set against a midnight blue background with geometric floral motifs. An ivory border with geometric motifs surrounds the composition. "The term Chirvan refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where a large number of carpets are produced. It is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvans carpets are knotted in towns (Kouba, Daghestan, etc.) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil.....). Bibliographical reference : - SABAHI, T. - Splendeurs des tapis d'Orient Éd.
