Description
Chirvan Marasali carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), East Caucasus.
Circa 1930-1960.
(Slight wear and old restorations).
Length: 117 cm; Width: 110 cm.
The carpet is embellished with numerous polychrome palmettes on a blue background. A border with a succession of multicoloured bands arranged diagonally is framed by two counter-borders.
"The term Chirvan refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where many carpets are produced. It is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvans carpets are knotted in towns (Kouba, Daghestan, etc.) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil.....).
