Description
Chirvan Lesghi carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), North-East Caucasus, circa 1950-1980. (Wear, old restorations and fraying). Length: 124 cm; Width: 97 cm. The carpet is decorated with a series of two blue and ivory cruciform medallions on a navy blue background with small polychrome geometric motifs. Three borders with geometric floral motifs surround the composition. The term Chirvan refers both to a type of carpet and to a region where many carpets are produced. It is a vast, mountainous region inhabited by a heterogeneous population. It stretches from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, forming a natural barrier between Europe and Asia. Chirvan carpets are knotted in towns (Kouba, Daghestan...) and villages (Tchi tchi, lesghi, seikour, Pérépédil...). Bibliographical reference : - SABAHI, T - Splendeurs des tapis d'Orient Ed.
