Description
Karabagh carpet (warp, weft and wool pile), South Caucasus.
Circa 1920-1960.
(Wear, old restorations and probably diminished).
Length: 233 cm; Width: 112 cm.
The carpet is decorated with a series of four elongated polychrome medallions in the form of leaves on a raspberry-red ground with foliate scrolls. Two narrow borders with geometric flower garlands surround the composition.
Karabagh means "black garden" and refers to a region in the southern part of Azerbaijan. It became an important weaving centre, with the creation of numerous factories, as early as the 17th century, under the impetus of Muslim and Christian craftsmen. During the 19th century, carpets were produced here using European-style roses based on French cartoons.
